Reading Skills & Fluency
Reading Assistant – Fluency Coach Technology

Achieve Reading Fluency & Comprehension Proficiency
Reading Assistant Expanded Edition software combines
advanced speech recognition technology with scientifically-
based interventions to help students strengthen their reading
fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Reading Assistant
acts as a patient, non-judgmental listener for emerging,
struggling or self-conscious readers. Trainers or teachers
receive assessment reports and can listen to audio samples of
their students as if they had been sitting next to their students,
listening.
It can be used either at the Lab or at home.

Students begin by listening to a model reading of the text. An
interactive glossary provides pronunciations, contextually
appropriate meanings and usages, illustrations, and Spanish
translations. With the goal of strengthening students’
comprehension, before students read aloud they must answer
Guided Reading Questions. These questions scaffold
comprehension using reading strategies and hints. Students
read 2 or 3 minute passages until they reach the fluency goal.
When students finish reading aloud, the text is color-coded to
show areas in need of review before re-reading. As students
work, the system automatically computes Words Correct Per
Minute and makes a record of what, how much, and how well
they have read.

Using research-validated speech recognition technology,
Reading Assistant "listens" to a student as he or she reads
aloud. Monitoring for signs of difficulty, the program
intervenes with assistance when the student is challenged by a
word. Students re-read passages several times to build
automaticity. Students are assessed to determine their level of
comprehension by skill.

The software maintains careful performance records and the
corresponding audio of each reading session for review by
student and teacher. The program computes the students
Words Correct Per Minute automatically.
READING SKILL BUILDER SERIES:
Critical Tools for Students

This READING Series increases processing efficiency and builds critical reading skills. No other reading
intervention program offers a more scientifically proven approach to helping students quickly improve
skills. Instant feedback and engaging exercises help motivate students to achieve success. Developed by
Scientific Learning’s neuroscientists.
This program can be used either at the Lab or at home.

There are 5 levels in the Reading Skills Series. Each level incorporates the same underlying cognitive skills
as the required Cognitive Skill Builder programs and builds on the skills introduced in the preceding levels.

Reading Level 1 builds critical early reading skills, with an emphasis on phonemic awareness, early
decoding skills, vocabulary knowledge and skills, and motivation for reading.

To accelerate reading progress, Reading Level 1 software develops brain processing efficiency in four
    key areas:

Builds memory by developing the ability to hold a spoken word, sentence or passage in working
memory while recalling letter-sound associations, vocabulary, punctuation rules or semantic
information from long-term memory.
Improves attention by requiring focused attention to listen while reading along and sustain attention
across multiple passage segments and questions.
Develops processing of images and sounds quickly enough to discriminate between their differences.
Develops sequencing by using positional clues to identify missing letters, to reorder the letters of a
'scrambled' word or by tracking the temporal and causal event sequences in passages to answer
comprehension questions.

Reading Level 2  consolidates early reading skills, with a focus on applying phonics and decoding strategies,
improving word recognition, and understanding the rules for reading comprehension.

To accelerate reading progress,  Reading Level 2 exercises critical brain processing efficiency in four
    key areas:

Builds memory by having students hold an incomplete sentence in working memory while recalling
vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation rules from long-term memory.
Improves attention by sustaining interest across multiple passage segments and questions.
Develops processing by coordinating the auditory and visual processing of two perceptual streams,
speech and written text.
Develops sequencing by using word order and grammar to identify subtle difference in meaning
among phrases, sentences and passages.

Reading Level 3  builds on the  Reading Level 2 product by concentrating on reading knowledge and
fluency, with a focus on phonology and spelling, morphological properties and complexity, syntactic
complexity, vocabulary and comprehension.

To accelerate reading progress, Fast ForWord Reading Level 3 software develops critical brain
processing efficiency in four key areas:

Builds memory by working on long-term recall of vocabulary and grammatical structures.
Improves attention by requiring selective attention to grammatical features of similar response
alternatives.
Develops processing of images and sounds quickly enough to discriminate between their differences.
Develops sequencing by using word order to help determine precise meanings.

Reading Level 4 exercises expand reading skills by applying knowledge of word origins, word forms, sentence structures, and punctuation rules to improve comprehension.

To accelerate reading progress, Reading Level 4 software develops critical brain processing efficiency
    in four key areas:

Builds memory by having students use working memory to compare paragraphs with single sentence
paraphrases.
Improves attention by enhancing the ability to focus on different aspects of presented vocabulary and
ignore distractions.
Develops processing of images and sounds quickly enough to discriminate between their differences.
Develops sequencing by using logical relationships, word order and syntax to identify precise
meanings.

Reading Level 5 expands earlier reading skills by applying knowledge of word origins, word forms, sentence structures, and punctuation rules to improve comprehension It concentrates on enhancing advanced reading
comprehension and expanding vocabulary skills.

To accelerate reading progress,  Reading Level 5 software develops critical brain processing efficiency
    in four key areas:

Builds memory by having students hold words and sentences in working memory while completing or
reorganizing sentences and paragraphs.
Improves attention by allowing students to selectively focus on critical information while sustaining
attention across longer text passages and question sets.
Develops processing by enhancing fluency in extracting and integrating meaning from longer text
passages.
Develops sequencing by enabling the recognition of causal and temporal event sequences in text
passages.
